Ligue 1: "We have to choose who we want to be," thunders De Zerbi after OM's draw

Ligue 1: "We have to choose who we want to be," thunders De Zerbi after OM's draw

The Italian coach gives his assessment after Marseille's draw against Angers (2-2) on Wednesday, during the 10th matchday.

Concerned about his team conceding "two goals per game," OM coach Roberto De Zerbi focused primarily on "a first half that's difficult to explain" following Marseille's 2-2 draw against Angers on Wednesday . "It's hard to explain. We were coming off two defeats, but we played well and created chances in those matches. So I'm also struggling to explain that first half," De Zerbi said in the post-match press conference.

At halftime, after a disastrous 45 minutes, OM were trailing 1-0 against Angers. Marseille then responded and took a 2-1 lead, before conceding an equalizer to Angers in stoppage time. "There were fresh players, like Murillo, Egan-Riley, and Angel Gomes. Even Aubameyang, who hadn't started against Lens. So I was expecting a different first half," he explained.

“We have to choose who we want to be. We can always be the team that beat PSG, or we can be a different team altogether, one that changes depending on whether it’s raining or sunny… It’s even something we sometimes saw during the match,” lamented the Italian coach. “We’re united, there are no problems in the locker room. We’re all disappointed, but we can’t throw everything away. We need to analyze, not the result itself, but the reasons behind the first half, why this Marseille team played like that in the first half,” De Zerbi added.

"We've been conceding two goals in every game since Le Havre, that's also what worries me, even if some of them come from incidents in the game. But if you concede two goals per game, it's hard to win," he also noted.

“The injuries are noticeable, yes, but fatigue isn’t a problem. If I had stayed at Sassuolo, I would have had one match per week, Mondays as a day off, and I would go for walks in the park with the dog. We did everything we could to play in the Champions League, so we can’t complain. Either you get used to this rhythm, or you aim for other competitions and other clubs,” De Zerbi concluded.
